Major Commemoration Marking the 40th Anniversary of the Passing of Eminent Scholar Sheikh Al-Tahir Al-Zawi

Today, Tuesday, the Sheikh Tahir Al-Zawi Charity Foundation (STACO) organized a prominent cultural event at the Corinthia Hotel in the capital, Tripoli, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the passing of the eminent scholar Sheikh Al-Tahir Al-Zawi (1890–1986), the former Grand Mufti of Libya and one of the region’s most distinguished figures in thought and heritage.

High-Level Opening

The events commenced at 10:00 AM with an opening session attended by an elite group of scientific and diplomatic figures. The session featured significant addresses, beginning with a speech by the Foundation’s Chairman, Eng. Salem Abdul Salam Ramadan, followed by remarks from representatives of prestigious Arab scientific and religious institutions, including:

Republic of Algeria: Prof. Dr. Kamel Eddine Qari, Representative of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments.

Republic of Tunisia: Prof. Dr. Hisham Quraissa, Director of the Higher Institute of Islamic Civilization at Ez-Zitouna University.

International Islamic Fiqh Academy: Prof. Dr. Hamza Abu Fares.

League of Libyan Ulema: Prof. Dr. Omar Mawloud Abdul Hamid, Deputy Grand Mufti of Libya.

During the opening, documentary films were screened showcasing the scholarly milestones of the Sheikh’s life alongside his complete collection of works. This was followed by the official inauguration of the Sheikh Al-Tahir Al-Zawi Scientific Heritage Exhibition.

Panel Discussion: Biography and Stances

Following the opening ceremonies, a panel discussion titled “Sheikh Al-Tahir Al-Zawi: His Life, Positions, and Works” was held, moderated by the President of the Libyan Academy of Arabic Language, Prof. Dr. Abdul Hamid Al-Harama.

The session featured research papers that discussed the Sheikh’s role as a model for the nation’s scholars, his efforts in heritage verification and dictionary compilation, and provided insights into his historical writings, jurisprudence, and patriotic stances.

Launch of an International Award

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Eng. Salem Ramadan announced an exceptional initiative: the launch of the inaugural “Sheikh Al-Tahir Al-Zawi International Award for the Arabic Language.” This award is designed to serve as a new beacon supporting the Arabic language and immortalizing the Sheikh’s legacy in preserving Arab and Islamic identity.
